Tips For Home Deck Design And Construction

porchWith many different outdoor living space options, decks are the perfect transition space from lawn to entertainment area. They become an extension of your home, providing the perfect place to relax during the summer months. With seating, tables, and lively decor this space can become a staple feature during those summer barbecues.

Ground Level Decks

Ground level decks are decks that are less than 12” above the ground. Many times, because they do not require the construction of guardrails or stairs, ground level decks can be easier to build. They give you the freedom to add built in seating, raised garden beds, and islands to turn this into your ideal entertainment space. There a few key things to consider when building a ground level deck:

1) First do some research on permit and building requirements. Take a look at the permit application so that you know what information you’ll need when you begin planning the layout of your deck. Also keep in mind the building codes when talking to your contractor about the construction.

2) Because this is a low level structure and built off floor level entryways, low doors will require excavating the land to create enough space for the deck frame.

3) Since ground level decks will expose wood to moisture in the soil it is advised to use pressure treated wood that will prevent the deck from rotting and decaying. It is important when building to have proper ventilation so that excess moisture can evaporate and dry the wood to help it from being destroyed. You can try adding gravel under the deck for water to easily drain out which will also help reduce the chances of mold build up. Consult your contractor when dealing with issues like these.
