The Best Floor For A Basement Remodel

Basement of new construction home with fireplaceWhen finishing a basement there are a lot of choices that you’ll have to make from the layout and design to the fixtures and flooring. However unlike the other rooms in your home a basement can be a more damp environment, requiring more durable materials. Selecting the proper flooring is a crucial step in creating a basement that will endure for years to come.

Depending on how well ventilated your basement is, you may already be aware that it’s best to avoid carpeting since it can be more susceptible to mold and mildew. Other materials you should shy away from include wood “sleepers” and plywood underlayments that are sometimes mistakenly laid over a basement floor. Similar to carpeting, wood can absorb and hold moisture because of its porous nature–exactly what you do not need in the basement.

One material that is known to fair well in basement environments is a high-density plastic, PVC, with surface finishes that mimic ceramic tile or wood parquet. This material won’t become damaged by moisture because it’s non porous, making it mold and mildew resistant. These PVC tiles also have a knobby underside that is ideal in the basement because it lets the tile flex over a rough, irregular concrete floor, while also providing drainage space and a thermal break.

Another popular choice for basements is vinyl flooring. It’s moisture resistant for one and vinyl flooring is also available in a variety of styles.  You can select from stone-look-alike and wood-look-alike vinyl tiles and planks. Vinyl can also be easily installed over a concrete floor without any adhesive. Another plus to vinyl flooring is that it won’t be cold under your feet. If you were to have stone tiles installed for example, your floor would be chilled. A stone-look-alike vinyl tile will pull off the same look without the chilling effect.

Whatever you choose for flooring in your basement be sure that the material is moisture-resistant. Between the naturally damp atmosphere of a basement to potential flooding risks you want to make sure your basement floor is a durable choice.
